“Her poems are moments sealed in bubbles, fragile yet fearsome, floating upwards until they break upon your imagination with a small pop. Author Susan Schaefer invites the reader to pause, reflect and delight as she lifts the Mississippi River like a sheet from its banks or creates a victory crown riding the new morning ‘each bead of sweat, a self-wrought jewel.’”

-Bob Ingram

Equality is not a women’s issue - it’s a societal one. When women do better all of society is lifted. All humans are drawn to images of the human face and to stories. We are hardwired for this. In Portraits of Empowerment: Women’s Wellbeing, Susan Schaefer puts a face on the issue of gender parity, illuminating the issue in words and images. The very act of being witnessed through photography and essay honors and validates each woman’s distinctive core.

This limited edition book is a collection of blog entries and letters detailing the life of my beloved late husband, Martijn Hermse, as we journeyed together in his brave and graceful battle against anal cancer. It is also the story of my grief.
